Michele St. Cyr and the members of the United Methodist Church in Milo. </p> <p>On June 21, 2009, a fire devastated the 98-year-old historic structure. On Sunday, December 5, 2010, Rev. St. Cyr was able to say "Welcome home!" to her congregation. The restoration was entrusted to Paul Davis Restoration and Keith Trembley Builders.</p> <p> "The fire was a terrible event but the restoration was a great experience," Rev. St. Cyr said. "We really had a good match with Keith and his people. Keith has the patience of a saint! He was so reassuring that everything would turn out ok. He dealt with the insurance building specialist, working out all the details. He and his staff are so professional. From Randy Nason and Joe Oulette who began the dry out and demolition work, to Moe Newland the project manager and Chad Rhodes, the head carpenter whose work you see in the photos, were all excellent matches to not only the job but the people of the congregation. Every one of them exhibited patience with questions, insurance glitches and the occasional spectator! We already miss having them around!"</p> <p> While work was being done on the church, the congregation used an addition and the fellowship hall in the church basement. When members of the church passed away, a neighboring Baptist church permitted the funerals to be conducted at their facility. </p> <p>The project was a major undertaking. The fire started in the rafters due to a chafed wire leading to a ceiling light. This caused extensive fire damage to two of the trusses and the underside of the roof decking. The trusses had to be replaced, and that portion of the project was captured on film. All of the heavily damaged framing and decking was removed. The entire roof system was sealed to encapsulate smoke odor.</p> <p> "We warranty our fire restoration projects for smoke odor," Moe Newland said, "and I'm proud to say this project is smoke free." </p> <p>Most of the damage was from water while fighting the fire. Water rusted the tin coverings on the walls and ceilings and destroyed the 98-year-old cypress trim and a stained glass window. To replace the wainscotting and trim, 100-year-old reclaimed cypress logs were found in Florida. </p> <p>The stained glass window was shipped to a company in Connecticut to be reproduced, no small feat due to the complexity of the design. Eight different components of tin were used to produce a product that would tie in with the areas of the church that were not damaged. Because the building is 98 years old, the sags, slopes and dips that occur over time in an older building added an extra level of challenge to the project. </p> <p>"This was a great project for us as it was a true restoration," Moe said. "As a group, we worked well together and took the time to do the job right. It's just so not me!" she explained to project manager, Gary Proulx. </p> <p>The home lacked functionality, color, flow and warmth. The kitchen was cramped and outdated and the main bath lacked lighting and ventilation, much less aesthetic appeal - an important element for the homeowners. </p> <p>One aspect of her home she particularly hated was when she entertained. She'd be stuck in the kitchen, out of the flow of conversation, left out while she prepared the meals for her family and guests. </p> <p>After listening to her explanation of how hard it was to prepare a meal, Gary was sympathetic. "I could easily understand why she gave up cooking," Gary said. "The entire space worked against her. For instance when someone came in the door, the refrigerator and range were blocked. And vice versa: if someone wanted to enter, they would have to wait for the cook to close the refrigerator door!" </p> <p><img src="http://keithtrembley.com/enewsletters//bath.jpg" alt="bath" width="150" height="200" hspace="5" vspace="10" align="right">To solve this impossible layout, a wall was removed and appliances moved. The newly designed kitchen now sports granite countertops, warm birch cabinets, and composite tile flooring. The kitchen now opens into a combination dining and living room, separated by a counter perfect for casual meals. </p> <p>The dining/living room, hallway and bathroom were also included in the renovation. Soft moss green paint brightens the home, replacing aging wallpaper from the past. Hardwood floors in the hallway, white molding, chair rail and doors, add to the welcoming color scheme. </p> <p>The main bath now has a new shower/bathtub combination, sink and toilet, and new tile, reflecting the soft colors of the hallway.</p> <p> "Now I absolutely love my home," the homeowner said. "Mission accomplished!" She added: "Working with the Keith Trembley Builders team was fun! They were so professional and respectful...and did I mention, I love my new home!"</p></td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" valign="top" bgcolor="#FFFFCC"><h1>Humane Society's call for help answered<a name="dogs"></a></h1> <p><img src="http://keithtrembley.com/enewsletters//dogs.png" width="398" height="144" alt="dogs"></p> <p>When the Bangor Humane Society wanted to hold an event to thank their donors, it didn't want to use funds meant for animals. Board member, Louise Cross offered to make a call to Gary Proulx, project manager for Keith Trembley Builders. </p> <p>"We're all a bunch of softies when it comes to animals," Gary said. Gary contacted Dave Climo, owner of <a href="http://www.climoelectric.com/" target="_blank">Climo Electric</a> and Kenny Therrien, owner of Art Landry Plumbing and Heating, both of whom were enthusiastic about pitching in. </p> <p>"We all share the same business philosophy," Gary said. "We believe that people do business with people - not companies - so we want to do what's right, morally and ethically. It certainly seem right to sponsor this event for BHS." </p> <p>The three companies covered all the expenses for a reception in May at the Muddy Rudder. Guest speaker Bill Irwin, author of Blind Courage, talked about trekking the Appalachian Trail with his seeing eye dog, Orient. Bill is the only blind person to complete all 2,169 miles of the trail.
